The Telephone Bar has been the one Cards gig where one can find a completely captive and silent audience. Between the mirrors, candles, roaring gas fire, and occasional twinkly lights, Telephone Bar was one of the greatest and most atmospheric places to witness Cangelosi magic. The weekly opportunity to hear their music in this forum will be greatly missed.
So, please, come on down to Telephone Bar tonight to show your love and support for a band that has played this room every Wednesday without fail for 5 years. I had put 3 or 4 in my newsletter, but Tamar informed me that is has will have been 5 years in March.
Where one door closes, another one opens. One of the main services that the Telephone Bar provided was that it helped to grow the early jazz scene immensely. All manner of locals, tourists, hipsters, musicians, music lovers, and people young and old have come through that place every Wednesday. They have been amazed by what they've found, and spread the word all over town that not only are the Cangelosi Cards are great, but that early jazz music in general is an incredible living art form played by many bands right here in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The past few years of dedication to free weekly gigs on the part of the Cards and other early jazz bands has created a loving and enthusiastic scene of dancers and civilians alike.
What does this all mean? This means that I was recently asked by the lovely people at The Lovin' Cup to produce a monthly early jazz show in their venue, Cameo. This is a dream come true for me and I am excited about making this event into something truly special. The event will feature 2 or 3 live bands each month. There will be plenty of room to dance and the venue owners are enthusiastic about having lindy-hoppers getting down in their (gorgeous) back room. My mission, though, is, not just to provide a place for dancers to find good dance music. My mission is to create a space where music lovers can find incredible music, and if they happen to dance, so be it. Wether you want to do the lindy-hop or jump up and down or pump your fist in the air or merely sway, the third Thursday of every month at Cameo will be a haven for all jazz lovers.
