Lichtman's Brain Cloud @ Banjo Jim's 2/1/2010

Last night I went to see "Lichtman's Brain Cloud" at Banjo Jim's. Dennis Lichtman of The Cangelosi Cards is the leader of this band which last night included: Izzy Zaidman (Guitar), Tamar Korn (Vocals), Raphael McGregor (Slide Guitar), Ian Riggs (Upright Bass), Dennis Lichtman (Mandolin/Clarinet/Fiddle), and Kevin Dorn (Drums). Needless to say, such an incredible line up of musicians under Dennis' leadership playing good old timey western swing produced a night of incredible music! See for yourself...

and some video...

Lichtman's Brain Cloud will be playing Banjo Jim's at 10:00 every Monday for the next month or so.

"Tight Like This" 1/28/2010

It feels strange to blog about my own event, but here I am! "Tight Like This" went off without a hitch on Thursday night and despite copious amounts of stress and nervousness, I managed to have a great time at my own event. It was beautiful!

First off, I could not have asked for more amazing bands to have played the very first one. Baby Soda Jazz Band and Tin Pan Blues Band have both been friends of mine for two or three years now and it was an absolute pleasure to be able to hire them for the gig. As a surprise bonus, Jake Sanders of The Cangelosi Cards was playing with an incredible group of musicians in the restaurant part of the venue while "Tight Like This" was going in Cameo Gallery in the back. This coincidence created a great vibe all throughout the establishment. I've never seen so many incredible musicians in one place unless you count Mona's on a particularly busy night.

Baby Soda Jazz Band

Baby Soda got started around 9:30 and played two ridiculously beautiful sets. Many, many lindy-hoppers attended- far more than I'd imagined. I was surprised by the dancer turn-out and I feel very lucky to be part of such a supportive scene that appreciates great music. There was a feeling of something new and exciting happening and the energy on the dance floor was high. It was fun to DJ the set breaks because everyone was so high off the live music.

Tin Pan played the second half of the night. Tin Pan consistently blows my mind. They brought so much energy to the stage, to the dancers, to the non-dancing music appreciators, to everyone. During their first set there were many, many people there. When they took a break, though, several dancers left.

Tin Pan Blues Band

Now, even though the number of people in the room had greatly diminished, Tin Pan kept playing for half an hour longer than they were scheduled to. In fact, it ended up being constructive that so many lindy-hoppers left, because it gave the leftover civilians room to boogie down a little bit and brought the attention primarily to the music. Attention to the music paired with non-lindyhoppers boogie-ing down amongst themselves is part of the original vibe I had intended to create at "Tight Like This". I hope that more and more "non-dancers" make it out next time so that we can all dance together in an even more democratic fashion.

Words cannot express how thankful I am to Josh at The Lovin' Cup for hiring me to put on this event in Cameo Gallery. It is a wonderful opportunity to spread the early jazz love. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported not just myself, but Baby Soda Jazz Band and Tin Pan Blues Band, and by proxy all the early jazz bands in the city. The very first "Tight Like This" was an incredible night and it will just keep getting bigger and better. See you all next time!

Bad News, Good News

My first order of business on this fine January day is actually a sad one. Due to the fact that The Telephone Bar is changing ownership, tonight will be the last time that Tamar Korn and The Cangelosi Cards will ever play together in the beautiful back room. The band will in fact cease to play there entirely in the very near future.

The Telephone Bar has been the one Cards gig where one can find a completely captive and silent audience. Between the mirrors, candles, roaring gas fire, and occasional twinkly lights,
Telephone Bar was one of the greatest and most atmospheric places to witness Cangelosi magic. The weekly opportunity to hear their music in this forum will be greatly missed.

So, please, come on down to Telephone Bar tonight to show your love and support for a band that has played this room every Wednesday without fail for 5 years. I had put 3 or 4 in my newsletter, but Tamar informed me that is has will have been 5 years in March.

Where one door closes, another one opens. One of the main services that the Telephone Bar provided was that it helped to grow the early jazz scene immensely. All manner of locals, tourists, hipsters, musicians, music lovers, and people young and old have come through that place every Wednesday. They have been amazed by what they've found, and spread the word all over town that not only are the Cangelosi Cards are great, but that early jazz music in general is an incredible living art form played by many bands right here in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The past few years of dedication to free weekly gigs on the part of the Cards and other early jazz bands has created a loving and enthusiastic scene of dancers and civilians alike.

What does this all mean?
This means that I was recently asked by the lovely people at The Lovin' Cup to produce a monthly early jazz show in their venue, Cameo. This is a dream come true for me and I am excited about making this event into something truly special. The event will feature 2 or 3 live bands each month. There will be plenty of room to dance and the venue owners are enthusiastic about having lindy-hoppers getting down in their (gorgeous) back room. My mission, though, is, not just to provide a place for dancers to find good dance music. My mission is to create a space where music lovers can find incredible music, and if they happen to dance, so be it. Wether you want to do the lindy-hop or jump up and down or pump your fist in the air or merely sway, the third Thursday of every month at Cameo will be a haven for all jazz lovers.
